Game helps young people reduce depression

SPARX is a computer program for young people with symptoms of depression that helps them to treat themselves.  The game creates a fantasy environment similiar to common quest-based entertainment games, however in this one, the challenges involve learning strategies for handling emotions and various life situations.

Evaluation results have been very positive and show the game is at least as effective as counselling for teenagers. The program has been developed by a team of specialists at the University of Auckland led by Associate Professor Sally Merry (software design by Metia Interactive.)
